Father Alerts School Leaders To Pill Problem

The Sand Creek High School father who helped launch a prescription drug investigation at the school said he did it to keep other kids safe.

Barry Bateman said he came home Tuesday to find his daughter stoned. Bateman said he didn’t take his daughter to hospital and knows of no overdoses tied to activity at Sand Creek High School.

“It’s been tearing me up quite a bit knowing that if a kid is leaving school in almost a comatose state its obvious,” said Bateman. “”What’s going on in class that a teacher doesn’t notice that?”

Bateman said his daughter was out of sorts by the time he got home on Tuesday but not passed out. He decided against taking her to the hospital and waited for the high to pass before questioning her and taking the pills from her. Bateman said the prescription drugs he took from his daughter were being traded at Sand Creek in the hallways.

“They’re powdering it up and snorting it in the bathrooms with shots of vodka. It’s ridiculous,” said Bateman.

Bateman brought the pills on drugs to Sand Creek on Wednesday, launching an investigation that has already led to two arrests. Police said the unidentified suspects were charged with possession of illegal narcotics charges and conspiracy. Police add that the investigation is still ongoing.

Bateman said he hopes this brings awareness to an issue that he doesn’t believe is isolated to just his daughter’s school.

“They’re the custodian of the children when they’re there, and I know they can’t be everywhere, but there is some stuff that is blatant and its uncalled for,” said Bateman.
