Witnesses Help Catch Accused Hit-and-Run Driver

Two people who witnessed a hit-and-run Wednesday morning between a car and a man on a bicycle help police capture the driver of the car.

The crash happened shortly before 1 a.m. at the intersection of Hancock and Pikes Peak Avenues.

Police say the bicyclist was riding eastbound on Pikes Peak Avenue when his bicycle got hit in the rear wheel. Police say this caused the driver to fall into the roadway.

The driver of the car left the scene but two witnesses to the crash followed him, police said. While following the driver, the witnesses were on the phone with police dispatchers relaying information such as a tag number on the car and a description of the driver.

Police stopped the driver a short time later near Pikes Peak Avenue and Academy Boulevard.

Police arrested the driver, Jeffery Givens, on suspicion DUI, reckless driving and hit-and-run.

The bicyclist was not seriously injured.
