Phony Complaint Claiming To Be From BBB Sent Via E-mail

The Better Business Bureau is issuing an urgent SCAM alert cautioning businesses and consumers about an e-mail scam.

An email that is purportedly from a bbb.org email address about a recently filed complaint is being sent to consumers. The scam was first announced on November 23rd. Although there are different variations circulating, all of the malicious emails contain links designed to infect computers with malware – specifically a Trojan Horse known as Zeuss of Zbot.

The Council of Better Business Bureaus (CBBB) has been working with a phishing deactivation service to shut down all websites that host malware, yet scammers continue to put up new sites. Deactivating these websites ensures that recipients who click on the link won’t be exposed to the virus. However, it will not prevent emails from going out in the first place.

This is a scam and it has been reported to the FBI.

Because the email is fraudulent, the BBB advises anyone that receives this email to take the following steps: Do not click on any links or reply to the message, Forward the message to phishing@council.bbb.org Completely delete the message from your inbox, Run a full virus scan on your computer if you did click on any links.
