Green Bridge Future

A green bridge stands silently near Peyton on Highway 24, east of Colorado Springs. The clock’s running out on the bridge. Demolition is set for January 30th. CDOT Engineer Mark Andrew tells me that there has been some interest from various agencies to relocate and save the bridge. So far, there have been no firm offers.

Andrew says if there is a firm offer with funds available, CDOT will alter the schedule to accommodate the agency that wants to adopt the bridge.

As we first told you in June, this bridge is loaded with history. It was built in 1935 by WPA workers. WPA was a federal project set up in the depression era to get America working again. During World War Two, German POW’s were housed under the bridge and did various work projects.

Some of the Green Bridge will be salvaged to be put it in a nearby monument. CDOT says it will be placed on Rock Island Trail.

The new bridge will go up this Spring. It will be finished early Summer and open to traffic.
