Scam Alert
Matthew and Reynee Thomas are sounding the alarms about a scam making the rounds. Someone from a Washington, D.C. number called them last week saying their teen daughter had just gotten a 7800 dollar college scholarship. The scammer with a thick accent told the couple all they’d have to do is Western Union them with two hundred dollars to get the bucks.
The Thomas family tells me they knew right off it was scam for several reasons. Their 17 year old daughter is going into the military and not straight to college. Also, this caller was very persistent to talk with the teenager.
Matthew Thomas told me, “College is expensive enough as it is, and now you have vultures trying to scam people out of hard earned money.”
Scam experts tell me that some companies sell your information including family demographics on what’s called a suckers list. Some dubious people buy the info and call as many people as they can to score a sale.
