D60 Board To Clarify School Closure Timelines

The Pueblo City Schools Board of Education will meet in a special session Saturday to clarify closure timelines for the schools the Board voted to close on January 12.

According to Pueblo City Schools, there was a lack of common understanding among the Board specifically surrounding the actual closure date for Spann Elementary.

The original recommendation from the Realignment Committees was that in order for Spann to retain nearly $250,000 in ‘turnaround’ funding the school would use the 2012/13 school year for planning and transition and then would close in August 2013.

The Board will affirm the closure date for Hellbeck and Spann Elementary schools and that of the Somerlid Elementary school building – while the students and staff of Somerlid will relocate as a school within a school to Freed Middle School.

The district says this action is taken not as a matter of revisiting the vote to close these schools but rather to clarify the respective closure timelines.
