2 Pueblo City Schools On Lockdown
Central High School and Heritage Elementary in Pueblo are on lockdown because of an unstable parent. The schools will dismiss students on time and there will be extra police officers at the school.
All District 60 schools were initially on lockdown but the lockdown was lifted from all but two of the schools around 11:00 a.m.
The Pueblo Police Department say they have spoken to the woman in question and at this time say she does not face any charges and is not in custody.
Police say it started at 9:10 a.m. Tuesday. Someone reported a possibly suicidal woman who was armed with a handgun in the 2600 block of Lucas Avenue. The woman was sitting in a black Ford SUV in front of the home. When police arrived she drove away.
The detective tried to pull the woman over but she refused to stop. Police say she was not traveling at a high rate of speed, but refused to pull over.
The woman was in contact with a School Resource Officer at Central High School where her son is a student. The Officer asked her to stop and talk with the officers but she still refused. She finally agreed to meet the Patrol Watch Commander at a convenience store on Eagleridge Blvd.
As she was heading to the convenience store, officers in an unmarked car watched her stop at a residence on the south side of town and hand something to a man. Officers contacted the male and discovered that she had given him the handgun, of which officers took possession.
When the woman arrived at the convenience store she spoke with the Watch Commander but would not exit her locked and running vehicle. She insisted she was not suicidal and, after a little over a half hour, she drove away.
She was last seen northbound on I-25. Her whereabouts are unknown at this time.
The woman is the mother of children who attend the two District 60 schools that remain on lockdown, police say.
A daughter who attends Heritage Elementary School has been removed from the school, police said. The child who attends Central has not been removed from the school.
Both children will not be returned to the mother, but police have not said where the children will be placed.
Police say the lockdown of District 60 Schools was strictly precautionary. They say the female never made threats towards the schools or towards the male who made the initial call.
