Fuel Spills Into Runyon Lake, Area Closed

A lake in Pueblo is closed after a dies fuel tank overflowed with petroleum.

According to the Pueblo Fire Department, a tanker truck was filling an underground tank at 7th and Grand when the tank overflowed. It is estimated that less than 100 gallons of fuel spilled and flowed into the storm sewer system.

Unknown amounts of fuel spilled into into Runyon Lake, causing The Runyon Lake recreation area to close until further notice.

PFD says a call came in later in the morning from near the Professional Bull Riders building at the Riverwalk reporting the smell of gas.

Crews determined the diesel fuel moved downstream in the storm sewer system that goes under the HARP channel. Crews are trying to absorb the fuel as it exits the storm water system at the lowest end of the HARP channel (near Grand and Santa Fe), and between the Riverwalk and Runyon Lake.

Other agencies involved in the operation include the Pueblo City/County Health Department and the Colorado Division of Wildlife.
