AFA Airman Awarded 2nd Bronze Star
An Air Force Academy airman was awarded a second Bronze Star Friday morning for his combat work in Afghanistan’s Kandahar Airfield.
Maj. Brent McGuire has served in Iraq and Afghanistan. He was awarded a Bronze Star for his actions in Iraq from 2006-2007. McGuire has now been awarded another Bronze Star for his work in 2011.
Col. Tim Gibson, Commander of the 10th Air Base Wing, spoke at the ceremony. He said very few airman earn a Bronze Star, so being awarded two is a huge honor.
He spoke of the origins of the Bronze Star, which was first established in 1944 during World War II for ground combat troops.
McGuire said he was humbled to get the award and wished the rest of his 451st Security Forces Squadron could have been at the ceremony.
“Given the honor to lead them in accomplishing those things, that to me is incredible,” he said.
McGuire was especially emotional when talking about his family. He even fought back tears.
“When you’re deployed, you’re dealing with something that’s event-driving, trying to solve problems,” he said. “You’re basically existing day-to-day, but… but the family at home, it’s not easy.”
McGuire’s wife, daughter and son attended the ceremony. His son, Sean, said he has considered joining the military, but knows that if he serves, he has very big shoes to fill.
“I love my family,” said Sean. “I love my dad and I’m proud of what he’s doing.”
McGuire said he has no plans to quit anytime soon. He said he will continue serving in the Reserves.
