Senator Udall Visits US Olympic Training Center
U.S. Senator Mark Udall stopped in Colorado Springs Thursday to visit the United States Olympic Training Center.
Udall said he has always wanted to see the over 36 acre facility.
?One of the reasons I wanted to come see the Olympic Training Center was to better familiarize myself with how it operates and be an even stronger supporter of the Olympic movement and America?s involvement in it,? he said.
Udall said he was impressed and proud of the facility, but said it is not only an asset to training athletes. He said it is also plays a vital role in the economy of Colorado.
?The presence of the U.S. Olympic Committee Training Facilities here in Colorado Springs is crucial for a hole list of reasons. Most importantly this is about jobs and economic vitality, not just of Colorado Springs but of Colorado,? said Udall.
The USOC told KRDO Newschannel 13 they are planning on expanding within the next year. They said the expansion will cost between $20-25 million, with 20 percent of that money going toward improvement of the visitor?s center.
?Leadership here at the training center are planning something really compelling to do more outreach and make this an even friendlier place to visit,? said Udall.
Udall added that he feels confident in the plan to expand, and is hopeful this will promote tourism to Colorado Springs.
?There are many ways in which by making this more of an attractive setting, I think you?ll draw people to want to see it. It could be a part of the destination that is Colorado,? Udall said.
