Laster Advised Of Murder Charges
Rayshawn Laster was advised of the charges against him on Tuesday. Laster is facing first-degree murder and is being held at the El Paso County jail without bond.
According to an arrest warrant, on Friday, Dec 30, 2011 at approximately 6:08 p.m., deputies of the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Division were dispatched to 413 Kiva Road in reference to a disturbance.
Brenda Taylor, 49, told deputies her son, Rayshawn, had shoved her and had allegedly choked her. Rayshawn left the house. Deputies completed their investigation and cleared the scene, the arrest warrant stated.
Deputies were dispatched back to the residence just before 8 p.m. to respond to a shots fired call, according to the affidavit.
An eye witness, Brenda’s sister, told deputies Rayshawn shot Brenda in the head.
The affidavit states that she observed the person of Rayshawn standing over his mother as she lay in her bed while talking to someone on a cellular telephone. The witness stated she observed Rayshawn pointing a silver in color handgun at the victim. She said she heard the gunshot and saw Rayshawn shoot the victim.
A neighbor told deputies Rayshawn sent her a text message that read “i killed brenda.”
A spokeswoman for the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office says Rayshawn Laster was arrested on Saturday without incident.
Brenda died at Memorial Hospital just before 10:00 Friday Night.
Comments made on Rayshawn’s Facebook page late Friday indicate that Laster may be considering suicide, or at the very least, will resist any efforts at arrest.
“Im[sic] sorry for nothing. My journey has come to an end,” wrote Laster long after the search for him had begun in earnest.
Laster will be in court Jan 9 for a preliminary hearing.
