Battling The Bulge: Local Group Fight Child Obesity

Physical education classes are getting cut back and recreation centers are being closed down. They are symptoms of a struggling economy, but one group wants kids to still be able to exercise no matter their family’s income.

Soccer Buddies is an organization that encourages kids 15 months to 12 years old to run, kick, and be loud in the name of health. Soccer Buddies has locations in Monument and Colorado Springs, and is offering a free, hour long class conducted by their coaches.

Steven Bosco, the program director for the group said the offer came about after coaches realized just how much children’s opportunities to exercise were being limited by the struggling economy.

“That is really the reason we wanted to offer the free hour because it is important for kids to exercise,” said Bosco.

The non-competitive group uses soccer basics to teach the kids coordination skills.

Soccer Buddies has planned a big meet up at the soccer field on 5025 North Academy from 12 p.m to 1 p.m on Saturday, and families are encouraged to bring their children to play.

Parents who are interested in taking advantage of the free hour or want to learn more about the program can also call 719.330.9642.
