Missing Hunters Found Safe In Saguache County

Two missing hunters were found safe in Saguache County on Thursday morning.

The men were reported missing in Saguache County after they didn’t return home Wednesday night.

A family member tells KRDO NewsChannel 13 that 62-year-old Allen Martinez and 82-year-old Salvador Garcia were found around 11:15 a.m. Thursday. She says they had truck problems and were stuck in a snow drift. The men were cold and hungry but are okay.

The Colorado Army National Guard assisted the Saguache County Sheriff’s Office in searching for the hunters. Northern Saguache County Fire Protection District firefighter Scott Mathias helped find the pair. He told us his first concern was frostbite for the two men. He got them in his truck and got the heater on them.

Rescued hunter Salvador Garcia told us when he saw Scott and the rest of the people searching for him, “He was sure glad and thanked them for all they did.”

Rescuers searched an area west of Saguache, about five miles north of the Saguache County Airport and 20 miles away from the town of Saguache. The search area sits at 8-10,000 feet and has 6-12 inches of snow on the ground.

The Colorado Army National Guard sent a helicopter from the High-altitude Army National Guard Aviation Training site in Gypsum, Colo. to search for the men at 7:40 a.m. Thursday.
