Prevent A Gun-Related Tragedy

A 5-year-old Fremont County girl’s accidental shooting death has spurred a push to make sure you and your family are gun safe. Paul Paradis is a gun dealer at Paradise Sales. He tells me gun safety can’t come at an early enough age.

By federal law, all new handguns are required to be sold with a lock. It’s similar to a bicycle lock. It’s a cable type. There are also gun safes that include the traditional key to open it up and those with key pads to type in a code to get to your weapon.

Paradis also says teaching safety to children is job number one for parents who have weapons around the house. He recommends teaching as soon as the kids show they are curious around weapons. At young ages Paradis says teach, “Stop; don’t touch; have an adult show this to you if you want to look at it.”

Check with Southern Colorado law enforcement. The National Shooting Sports Foundation pays for free gun locks to be given away by law enforcement. .
