Colo. Ed Board Will Appeal School Funding Decision
The state education board will also appeal a ruling requiring Colorado to come up with a new way of funding its schools.
The board voted 4-3 on Tuesday to ask the Colorado Supreme Court to review the Dec. 9 ruling in the Lobato case. Education commissioner Robert Hammond will also file an appeal of his own.
All of the board’s Democrats voted against an appeal. They are Elaine Gantz Berman of Denver, Jane Goff of Arvada and Angelika Schroeder of Boulder.
Last week, Gov. John Hickenlooper said he would also appeal the decision to the state’s highest court.
Earlier this month, a Denver judge ruled that the current funding system is “irrational and inadequate.” She said the current formula can remain in place until further action by the higher court.
