Governor Plans To Restore Millions For Education
Good news for schools all across Colorado: it could mean less cuts for your child?s schools.
D-60 and D-70 school leaders were happy to hear the news that Gov. John Hickenlooper wants to restore millions of dollars for education.
?I think it certainly was exhilarating news,? said D-60 Superintendent Maggie Lopez.
The news came Tuesday from Hickenlooper. He wants to restore $89 million to education funding. The reason, state revenues are $231 million higher than state leaders anticipated.
?I mean, it’s just been a long time sense we’ve had positive news about budget. It was great news to hear,? said Lopez.
Especially in a time when schools are forced to make cuts. Cuts that for D-60 have stirred heated debates in Pueblo. School leaders have suggested closing down some schools. The closures would save the district around $1.8 million in operating cost. Four elementary schools are on the chopping block.
Lopez is quick to remind D-60 parents and students, the money may not affect that outcome.
?It’s a little early to know to say. It’s also two different pieces of data and so our school board and our community; we’re going to be working the weeks to come to look at the information that’s being presented,? said Lopez.
