Accidents On US 287 Cause Major Delays

Several traffic accidents on US 287 are causing major delays for drivers on Wednesday afternoon.

Several drivers told KRDO NewsChannel 13 that they were at a stand-still on the highway near Campo for about 3 hours.

A CDOT representative says there were several accidents in the area starting around 10:00 a.m. that caused the highway to close intermittently.

According to the Baca County Sheriff’s Office, there was an accident involving three vehicles that caused the highway to close at Mile Marker 13, just north of Campo. Colorado State Patrol says the accident happened around 10:00 a.m. and involved two semi trucks and a car. Because of the road conditions and the amount of debris in the road, the clean-up of the accident took longer than usual, according to BCSO and CSP. That accident was cleared and the highway re-opened around 3 p.m.

At 3:20 p.m., a semi truck caught on fire at mile marker 19. The fire has been extinguished, but fire crews are still mopping up and cleaning up hazmat from hydraulic fluid spilled during the fire. There is now reportedly one lane open in each direction, but traffic is moving very slowly.

According to CDOT, there are long delays between Springfield and Oklahoma. They advise alternate routes for drivers.

It is unclear if anyone was injured in any of the accidents.
