Deadly Crash Kills One Prisoner, One Guard On I-70

A prisoner transport van crashed on I-70 in Lincoln County around 11:00 a.m. Monday, killing one inmate and a female corrections employee.

Colorado State Patrol says the van was carrying 9 prisoners and two guards when it rolled over.

According to CSP, all other offenders have been accounted for and are being treated for injuries.

The transport originated at the Kit Carson Correctional Facility in Burlington, Colorado, a private prison operated by Corrections Corporation of America (CCA) and was in route to the Limon Correctional Facility.

As of 12:15 p.m., one eastbound lane of I-70 was closed in the area.

The Department declines to release names until the appropriate notifications have been made.

“My heartfelt condolences to the family members and co-workers of the CCA staff member tragically lost today. My sincere condolences also go out to the deceased offender’s family and loved ones,” said Tom Clements, Executive Director of the DOC after being briefed on the incident.

Colorado State Patrol is investigating the cause of the accident.
