SE Colorado Braces For Winter Storm
Farmers, families and emergency officials are bracing for an approaching winter storm.
Several southeastern Colorado counties will be under blizzard watches and warnings starting late Monday morning.
“I’ve been watching the snowstorm for the last three days,” said Harold Self, director of emergency services for Baca County. He said plows and emergency personnel are on stand-by.
“Our convenience stores, I checked them awhile ago… are selling out of a lot of supplies. Our people are very self sufficient and are prepared,” said Self.
Self said if conditions are as predicted, he hopes residents who can stay home will and those who head out have their winter driving kits.
Las Animas County Sheriff James Casias said reaching people who need medical care or are in emergency situations can be difficult in his large rural community during a snowstorm. But Casias said they are ready to handle anything.
“Years back we got 6 feet of snow and were able to get people help through services from the county, army and state of Colorado,” said Casias.
Now, Self said it’s just a matter of waiting and watching the skies. “We’ve got a 70 degree day right now, we are out enjoying the sunshine before the storm,” said Self.
