Renovating The Steelworks Museum

One of Pueblo?s oldest buildings could soon undergo some major changes. The Bessemer Historical Society wants to remodel parts of its Steelworks Museum.

“It’s one of the oldest buildings in Pueblo,” said Julie Rodriguez, Executive Director.

The building is 110 years old.

“It really served as the administration building and hold the history of the industrials west,” said Rodriguez.

From the outside, it appears it stood the test of time, step inside and the images show something very different.

?That would be just so sad if that building wasn’t restored and used as the history of Pueblo,? said Janet Boyd, a board member.

Boyd use to work in the building several years ago.

?It was a hub of activity during that time,? said Boyd.

That was in the seventies, the building has been empty since the early nineties.

Boyd and Rodriguez are two of many trying to save it. It would be an additions to the Steelworks Museum.

?It needs to be renovated and it really is preservation of Pueblo’s past,? said Rodriguez.

A grant helped them design the plans for renovating. Rodriguez said the next phase is a tough one, raising money for the repairs. The upgrades will cost ten million dollars.

“That includes hazmat removal before we can actually start the renovation of the building,” said Rodriguez.

The building both women hope to soon see transformed.

?Its so unique and its part of the history of pueblo,? said Boyd.

People can go to the museum and take a look at the new design plans. You can go from Monday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
