Horse Rescue In Pueblo County

Pueblo County deputies, a veterinarian and members of a local road crew all banded together to save a horse from a 7-foot hole.

?They’re like kids to me, I’ve got four kids,? said Ester Kevan, the horse?s owner.

Kevan found one of her horses, Abby-Dabbey-Do, stuck in a hole Tuesday afternoon.

?I couldn’t believe she was there,? said Kevan.

She found her stuck in the hole. She said they were digging the hole trying to get to the pipeline. She wanted to put a faucet outside to get water for the horses. But Abbey fell into the 7-foot hole butt first.

?That was terrifying. The worst thing you can think of happening is not get them out,? said Kevan.

It wasn?t just Abby that was in danger.

?We didn’t want to harm her in any way, shape or form with her being pregnant,? said Kevan.

Rescuers got her out in about 2 hours, using a backhoe normally used for ditch work. “Of course, none of us wanted to access the hole for the lower portion of the animal for fear of confined space and it rolling off on top of us,? said Dylan Jacketta with the Pueblo County Sheriff?s Office.

Afterwards, they filled the hole.

?If we can lift a 900-pound mare our human skills are threefold,? said Jacketta.

Now, all Abby has left of that scary day is a cast.

?With the cooperation of everyone her life was saved,? said Kevan.

Kevan?s four horses are expecting. She said she will have to watch Abby carefully to make sure her baby will be ok.
