Alleged Child Abuse Victim Dies, Murder Charges Filed

Colorado Springs Police say a suspected child abuse victim who has been hospitalized since November 9th passed away on Friday.

The 1 year old was unconscious and not breathing when rescuers were called to her home in the 900 block of Zamora Circle.

Detectives from the crime against children investigated and said they suspected child abuse in the case.

The girl was in the care of 27 year old Melissa Alexander. Alexander was later arrested for child abuse.

An autopsy was performed on the toddler on Saturday and the cause of death was ruled a homicide.

Following the release of autopsy results, a felony child abuse charge against Alexander was upgraded to a charge of First Degree Murder.
