Pueblo Man Takes Guns For Food

It?s not every day you see signs that say: ?Food for Guns.?

?If you want to change your life you have to change your lifestyle,? said Frank Arteaga.

He hopes his program Food for Guns will help. He?s giving food or $50 in exchange for guns. The program started back in 1993.

?When I found a young gang member in an alley and he had a bullet in his head and there was nothing I could do about it,? said Arteaga.

He?s hoping to prevent that from happening again.

?A lot of them are taken in burglaries and robberies, and they end up in the streets,? said Arteaga,

The guns often end up in the hands of teenagers.

?If you?re hiding the gun to for somebody, you?re going to be charged with everything they can prove that weapon was involved in,? said Arteaga.

He?s collected 51 guns since the program was launched.

He also has the support of Pueblo city leaders. Pueblo Police Chief Luis Velez and City Manager Jerry Pacheco sent Arteaga a letter, both commending him for his efforts.

?We don?t care how we get the weapons as long as they?re in our possession,? said Arteaga.

Police pick up the guns collected by Arteaga.

These are the drop-off locations.
