Xcel Energy Files To Increase Colo. Electricity Rates
Xcel Energy wants to increase its electricity rates.
On Tuesday, Xcel filed with the Colorado Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) for a net $141.9 million increase in overall electricity rates. The proposed increase, together with a recently filed $29.2 million rider reduction, will result in an overall rate increase to Colorado customers of about 4 percent.
“No one wants to see their bills increase, especially during difficult economic times, but this rate change is needed to meet our commitment,” said David Eves, president and CEO of Public Service Co. of Colorado, an Xcel Energy company.
“Since our last electric rate case, we have added more than $750 million of investment in Colorado to meet our customers’ needs,” Eves added.
Xcel Energy has requested that the new rates go into effect on Dec. 23, 2011, although the CPUC is expected to defer implementation so that it can hold public hearings.
In the next few days, the company also will file for $100 million of the total requested increase on an interim basis, to go into effect in January 2012. Xcel Energy would give customers credit, with interest, should the final rate increase amount be less than the interim rate request.
Additional information on the electric rate case filing announced today will soon be available on the Xcel Energy website, xcelenergy.com; it will provide more rate case information, electric energy savings and safety tips.
