Holiday Shopping Safety Tips

The holiday season is the time when gifts are being bought and burglars are looking for the opportunity to steal them.

Barbra Miller with the Colorado Springs Police Department says that car burglaries are always on the rise during the holiday season.

“Don’t put packages where they can be seen. Lots of times people go shopping, they’ve got so many packages that they’ll return to there car and put them in there, and that’s what the thieves are looking for,” according to Miller.

Here are some helpful tips from police to keep you and your presents safe:

-Don’t leave presents in the back seat; put them in the trunk.

-Park your car in a well-lit area.

-Have your keys in your hand before leaving the store so you are not searching through your purse.

-Avoid distractions and keep awear of your surroundings.

Online shopping has its own dangers as well. The FBI warns online shoppers to be cautious, don’t open any “spam” emails, go directly to the site you plan to shop from and if it sounds to good to be true, it probably is.
