Garage, RV Go Up In Flames

Two people are without a home after a mobile home goes up in flames.

The blaze ignited in the 1500 block of West Colorado early Sunday afternoon. It quickly spread to a detached garage.

Colorado Springs fire crews said when they arrived on scene, both the RV and garage were fully engulfed in flames.

Neighbors said a loud noise brought them out of their homes.

“It was like a bomb went off,” said Michael Cervantes, who lives in the neighborhood.

“We came out to see,” said neighbor Ann Nielsen. “There was just smoke coming out at the middle of the top at first, and then another boom and the whole thing was engulfed in flames.”

“It was impinging on the structures on both sides of it,” said Colorado Springs firefighter Jeff Sievers.

According to Sievers, fire crews knocked out the blaze in a matter of minutes.

“When they put the fire out, it’s like a big old cloud of ash came down,” said Cervantes. “It’s like it was snowing. It was really crazy.”

“I don’t know what was inside of that motor home,” said Nielsen, “but it was powerful.

Neighbors are just thankful no one was hurt.

“It could have been a lot worse,” said Nielsen.

Officials shutdown parts of West Colorado Avenue for a short time in order to get enough water to extinguish the fire.

Police said a man was cooking breakfast in the RV, when the loud explosion occurred.

Officials said the RV and garage are a total loss. Two people have been displaced. The are being helped by the Red Cross.

There are no reports of any injuries. Investigators are looking into what caused the fire.
