Colorado Records Its First Two Ski Season Fatalities
Two people have died on the slopes, marking the first fatalities of the 2011/2012 ski season.
Eagle County sheriff’s officials say a 62-year-old man died after losing control at Vail Ski Resort on a beginner’s trail Friday, which was the resort’s opening day for ski season.
Sheriff’s official say the man suffered injuries but it’s unknown how he died. An autopsy is scheduled Saturday. The man’s name is not being released.
Meanwhile, a 20-year-old University of Colorado-Boulder student died after hitting a tree while snowboarding on an intermediate trail at Breckenridge Ski Resort.
The Summit County coroner’s office identified the man as Evan Massini of Westbrook, Conn.
Both men were wearing helmets. The coroner says Massini suffered massive internal injuries when the main part of his body hit the tree.
Vail Resorts Inc. owns both resorts.
