New Commander For Fort Carson

Major General David Perkins transferred command of Fort Carson and the 4th Infantry Division to Major General Joseph Anderson at a ceremony held on post Wednesday.

?It?s exciting. You wait a long time to be a division commander. It?s an honor and privilege,? said Anderson.

The United States Military Academy graduate went on to serve in the airborne, air assault, ranger, light and mechanized infantry units.

Anderson has also served in Iraq, where he said he served as brigade commander with Perkins.

More recently, Anderson served as Multi-National Forces/United States Forces-Iraq Chief of Staff and Department of the Army Headquarters Director of Operations, Readiness and Mobilization.

Anderson tells KRDO Newschannel 13 that he has been in Colorado Springs for about two weeks and is already impressed by the city.

?I think the support base here, I thought some of the other bases I?d been were phenomenal, but I think here outpaces everywhere I?ve been,? he said.

Anderson said he is ready for the challenges that lie ahead and is already concocting game plans.

?I want to maintain the level of support to our soldiers and their families. We have to maintain support to our war efforts abroad, that is No. 1. No. 2 is taking care of everyone back here and No. 3 is always getting ready for the next adventure,? said Anderson.

Fort Carson told KRDO Newschannel 13 that they are anticipating orders to deploy to Afghanistan to assist with the ongoing efforts in the region. Anderson said they are unsure of when this would occur, but refer to the estimated time as ?a moving target based on the drawing out in Afghanistan, what some of the policies are going to be and some of the unit alignments that are occurring in the army.?

Perkins took command in July 2009, and recently returned from a 12-month deployment to Iraq. He is moving to Fort Leavenworth in Kansas where he will be serving as commanding general, U.S. Army Combined Arms Center.
