Fort Carson Heroics On Display Following Wreck

A Iraq war veteran and Fort Carson medic, trained to help warriors in battle, found his special set of skills needed on the way to work Thursday morning.

Private First Class Logan Cameron is one of three soldiers from the mountain post that came upon a terrible wreck at Highway 115 and Lake Avenue before paramedics arrived.

Cameron grabbed his aid bag and assessed each of the three teenage girls that had been thrown from the car. All three teens were thrown from their car. One girl was trapped underneath a vehicle according to police.

“My thought process was, ‘How I can I reach who is accessible? Who can I get to? Is their airway good?'” said Cameron who lives just up the hill from the wreck and was on his way to work. Cameron said all were awake, alert and screaming.

“They were scared but I was able to calm them down,” said Cameron. “They were all very collected, they listened when I told them help was there and they were going to be alright. It feels good.”

Another soldier that stopped to help was SSgt. Shane Corley. He said the scene was emotional.

“[I] wanted to make sure the girls and the father were alright,” said Corley.

The 11, 15, and 16 year olds were all taken to the hospital. One girl was then transferred to a Denver hospital due to serious burns.

Corley and Cameron said a third Fort Carson soldier was also on the scene before paramedics arrived but he was in plain clothes and unable to be identified.

“My sincere gratitude for my fellow soldiers that were there to help on scene,” said Cameron.
