Pueblo Events Honor Veterans

Several events commemorated Veterans Day in Pueblo, including one at South High School and another at CSU-Pueblo.

Medal of Honor recipient Drew Dix spoke at South High School. He is one of four Medal of Honor recipients from Pueblo. Dix is the only still living.

He told students that you don’t necessarily have to join the military to be a hero, but he encouraged all students to learn the value of hard work.

David Vaughn is a leader of South High School’s Jr. ROTC. He said that he grew up learning about Dix’s heroism, so he was honored to meet him.

Vaughn plans to join the Army in January. He said he will never forget this Veterans Day thanks to the retired Army Major.

Teachers set up several exhibits to teach students more about each of the major wars on Friday. They said they had been planning for this event since the beginning of the year.

There was also a dedication ceremony for the refurbished Southeast Asia Memorial at CSU-Pueblo.

There are 623 names on the memorial. All of the Colorado men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the Vietnam War are represented.

Dix, a co-founder of the Center for American Values, also said his organization was hosting an event.

It is scheduled for 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Friday. He said the public was invited to join him and other service members for hot dogs and apple pie.
