Designated Driver Strapped For Cash

They keep drunk drivers off Colorado Springs roads and don’t ask for anything in return. But now Designated Driver of Colorado Springs needs the community to lend some financial support.

“It (money) has always been a struggle,” said Executive Director Nonie Rispin.

On Friday, the group had no choice but to stop operations. Rispin posted this on their website:

Due to the recent loss of sponsors and the overall shortage of funding, we are temporarily unable to provide our service. If we are able to receive the necessary funding, we will be happy to resume service. Designated Driver service will still be available for private parties and special events for a donation. Please call 719-650-3450 Monday thru Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. to request Designated Drivers for your event.

Over the last three years, the group has given nearly 12,000 rides. On an average night, Rispin said they take about 50 people home.

With the holiday season right around the corner, Rispin said the lack of funding isn’t an ideal situation. “It’s always a bad time for us not to exist these next couple of months between Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years… it’s a bad time,” said Rispin.

Rispin said they need about $288,000 to operate. While all their drivers are volunteers and spend their own money on gas, she said they have a lot of operating expenses including insurance, rent, phone and marketing.

The group is holding a fundraiser on Friday, Nov. 11 at Meadow Muffins Bar and Grill in Old Colorado City. Doors open at 8 p.m.. Three soldiers will be auctioned off to three lucky ladies.
