Cadets, Alumni Tailgating Freedom And Football

Nearly two months after “don’t ask, don’t tell” went away, openly gay and lesbian Air Force Academy Alumni and Cadets showed their pride.

The Blue Alliance, a gay and lesbian alumni group, hosted a tailgating party before the Air Force/Army football game on Saturday.

“Things have changed,” said Tricia Heller, Blue Alliance member. She said their group is a resource for cadets and have helped graduates heal from their experiences.

“It removes stress and pressure from cadets that have to worry about being kicked out anytime,” said Blue Alliance Executive Director Greg Mooneyham.

The alumni group was formed four years ago and holds an annual dinner. The dinner followed the football game.

“Lots of cadets at tailgate and expected to come to dinner tonight.. which really speaks to the atmosphere of the Air Force Academy,” said Mooneyham. But he added it will take time for many gay and lesbian cadets to feel enough say something.
