UPDATE: Suspect Caught After Swat Standoff
Suspect Joshua Mueller, the man deputies say triggered an afternoon standoff, is in custody.
El Paso County Sheriff’s Sgt. Michael Schaller says the situation stemmed from an investigation into a stolen vehicle.
Earlier Thursday, three people in a house at 6845 Narrow Gauge Street were taken into custody in conjunction with an auto theft investigation. Another person connected to the investigation, Mueller, was initially believed to be inside the home, but after a standoff that lasted several hours, law enforcement teams determined the suspect was not inside the house.
A spokesman for the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office said Mueller turned himself in at a police substation in Colorado Springs Thursday night. Mueller had an active warrant for car theft out of Park County.
A District 3 spokesperson says King Elementary was on shelter in place starting at 1:35. Shelter in place means classes run normally inside the school, but no one can go in or out. Precautionary measures were also reportedly made at Mesa Ridge High School and Janitell Junior High. Some students who lived in and around Narrow Guage Street were held at the school until parents could come pick them up in person.
A woman who said she roomed with Mueller in 2010 said she’s not surprised that Mueller was at the center of the police activity that brought the neighborhood to a standstill Thursday afternoon.
“I feel like he’s a very dangerous person,” said Jennifer Pietch. “He knows a lot of people and can definitely be very aggressive.”
