Drivers Stranded During Icy Morning Commute

Wednesday’s winter storm was marked by strong winds and below-freezing temperatures. That meant an icy commute for drivers throughout southern Colorado.

KRDO NEWSCHANNEL 13 came across a downed light pole on East Fountain Boulevard near Jet Wing Drive.

It appeared as though a driver crashed into the pole, knocking it over, and then fled the scene.

Drivers were having a difficult time swerving around the pole on the roadway. In fact, some drove over it and one car almost got stuck.

Police arrived shortly after to help clear the light pole from the roadway.

There were also problems along North Powers Boulevard. The intersection of Powers and Barnes Road had to be closed for a short time Wednesday morning.

Sections of North Carefree Circle and Tutt Boulevard also had to be closed for a short time.

KRDO NEWSCHANNEL 13 spoke to Ronald McKinney who was stranded because of the icy roads.

“As I was approaching Barnes, I just realized that I was going 20 miles per hour and my car was kind of fishtailing, so I just made the decision to pull over,” said McKinney.

McKinney said a friend who lived nearby was planning to pick him up. Another stranded driver nearby also said she was waiting for a friend to pick her up.

Overall, drivers said they wanted to play it safe.

“I don’t want to wreck my car or hurt anybody else on the road,” McKinney said.
