Springs Police Chief Search Suspended

Colorado Springs Mayor Steve Bach suspended the search for a new Colorado Springs police chief on Wednesday.

Mayor Bach tells KRDO News Radio that interim Police Chief Pete Carey is going to stay on board for a long-term trial run. He will likely be at the post for several months.

Carey is taking over for Police Chief Richard Myers who will retire in mid-November.

Carey was named interim chief on Oct. 11, a week after Police Chief Richard Myers announced his retirement. Myers announced his retirement saying that Mayor Bach wanted a “change of direction.”

The mayor’s chief of staff, Steve Cox, initially said that Carey was in position until a nationwide search was conducted which would take between 60 and 90 days.

Carey was named deputy chief in January 2008. Since he joined the Colorado Springs Police Department in 1984, he has been a Master Patrol Officer, field training officer, narcotics detective, and crisis negotiator. Carey has held supervisory positions in the Patrol Bureau; Metro Vice, Narcotics and Intelligence Unit; Training Academy; Specialized Enforcement Unit and Major Crimes Unit.
