City Gearing Up For An Icy Night

Warm roads melted much of the snow that fell onto southern Colorado roads Wednesday morning, and this has left a lot of residual moisture. This moisture is going to present problems overnight as the Stormtracker 13 Forecast is calling for below freezing temperatures.

The City of Colorado Springs Streets Division told KRDO Newschannel 13 that they are prepared to monitor the roads and deploy plows as the need arises.

?As it starts to refreeze, you start to see a little bit of slush and that?s when we will send our guys out to start treating,? said Bard Lower, operations manager.

Lower said they will be monitoring the conditions using forecasts as well as devices that are incorporated into the roads.

?We have hockey pucks in the road and they are sensors. They sense the temperature of the roadway so we can watch the pavement temperature drop so we can keep an eye on things that way,? said Lower.

El Paso County Department of Transportation said they also plan on having sixteen plows out on the roadways during the rush hour, and are already planning on sending out another 16 plows starting at 4 a.m.
