Candy Or Meds?

More than half off all children under five took a trip to the Emergency Room for the same reason. They accidentally gobbled up prescription medication. However, candy and some over the counter meds are too similar in appearance for parents and health experts.

Sweet Tarts resemble Mylanta or Tums. Reece’s pieces look similar to the decongestant, Sine-Off. M & M’s were also mistaken for decongestant, Coricidin.

The Medicine Shoppe Pharmacist, Jim Butler reminds parents and care givers that those medications could be mistaken by parents, too.

Some health experts think future packaging design changes could help stop accidental poisonings. Those changes could include flow restrictors on liquids and one at a time, tablet dispensing containers.
