Medal of Honor Brought Home To Ft. Carson

A Medal of Honor is dedicated to the 4th Infantry Division in what Army leaders called a historic ceremony.

The Medal of Honor was awarded to First Sergeant David McNerney for his brave actions on March 22, 1967 during the Vietnam War.

According to his fellow soldiers, McNerney’s company was attacked that day by a North Vietnamese battalion.

Despite being injured by a grenade and learning that his commander and his artillery forward observer were killed, McNerney took command. Soldiers said he risked getting hit by enemy fire to signal for help.

Soldiers said McNerney saved dozens of lives, but his family said McNerney never took credit and instead gave credit to the men he served with.

McNerney died October 10, 2010 of lung cancer, but asked that his medal be given to the men of the Ivy Division.

A ceremony Thursday morning honored that wish. McNerney’s medal will now be housed at the Mountain Post’s Historic Center by the main gate.

Fort Carson leaders said it will be accessible not only to soldiers, but also to the public.
