Free Surgeries Performed In Pueblo
Around 20 people will wake up pain-free Sunday morning. It’s all thanks to a handful of Pueblo doctors who performed free surgeries Saturday.
It all started with a trip to Haiti, doctors from the Pueblo Surgical Center knew there were also people in Pueblo who needed medical help and couldn?t afford it.
?I just had an idea,? said Dr. Benjamin Massey.
His idea helped around 20 people this weekend.
?You can?t pay for the surgery we are giving today, it?s a gift,? said Massey.
The gift removed Ken Sypher?s hernia.
?I had been dealing with a lot of pain, last year it really escalated,? said Sypher.
For Johnny Brown it removed the knot in his shoulder.
?I?ve dealt with this for three years because I didn?t have insurance,? said Brown.
Sypher and Brown are just two of the many who received free surgeries at the Pueblo Surgical Center.
?She told me to come in at 10 a.m. but I was so excited I came in at 9 this morning,? said Brown.
This is the fourth annual Surgical Day of Giving.
?It?s become a community effort,? said Massey.
Doctors, nurses and medical students from all over Pueblo volunteered.
?Even if we are only helping one person?statistically, it means nothing to the problems with our health care system, but to that one person it means everything,? said Massey.
?It meant a lot to me,? agreed Brown.
It?s a sincere appreciation.
?You see it in their faces, you see it behind their eyes,? said Massey.
It?s gratitude you can even hear.
?You all are a blessing, you all are truly a blessing,? said Brown.
They will walk away pain free and it all started with an idea. An idea Pueblo doctors had to help others at no cost.
?It kind of restores your faith,? said Sypher.
The doctors are only able to perform outpatient surgeries. They hope to continue the annual Surgical Day of Giving next year.
Patients have to qualify for the free surgeries. You can call the Pueblo Surgical Center at 719- 544-1600. They can put you on a list for their next round of free surgeries.
