Woman Alleges Sexual Assault Near Springs Bar

A young woman told police she was sexually assaulted by a stranger in front of Tony’s Bar in downtown Colorado Springs early Saturday.

Police said they were called to Tony’s just after 1 a.m. They questioned several people in the area, but made no arrests.

“The only suspect information we had was a male with red hair,” said Sgt. Scott Wisler.

Passerby Jackie West was walking back to her car when she saw police and the victim.

“She was devastated,” said West. “It was really hard to look at because she had obviously been very hurt. She looked bruised, maybe scratched up and she was crying. She was really upset.”

West said it was a wake-up call for her.

“I talked to a lot of my girlfriends right away, and I said, ‘So often we go out wanting to have a good time relaxing and were not cautious enough,'” said West. “Because it could’ve happened to any of us.”

Police said people should always be alert and aware of their surroundings, especially when they’re out late at night. Sgt. Scott Wisler said carrying mace and sticking with friends are also good safety tips.

“Don’t walk to your car alone,” said Wisler. “Always make an arrangement of some sort where you can get an escort.”

West said she and her friends are making some changes.

“My girlfriends and I have already talked about staying together, maybe even taking a self-defense class,” she said. “Definitely letting people know where we are and who we’re hanging out with.”
