Detective Faces Perjury Charge In Murder Case

A Fort Collins police detective accused of lying in a murder trial that resulted in the conviction of an innocent man is due in court to face perjury charges.

The (Fort Collins) Coloradoan reports that Lt. Jim Broderick faces nine charges of perjury Thursday.

The charges stem from the 1990s investigation and prosecution of Timothy Masters, who was accused of killing a Fort Collins woman in 1987.

Masters was released from prison in 2008 after DNA evidence overturned his conviction.

Broderick was indicted on similar charges last year, but those were thrown out by a judge concerned about the statute of limitations on perjury.

Broderick was re-indicted in July.

Broderick has been on paid leave since 2010.

The newspaper reports that city has financed his legal defense.
