Starving, Weak Dogs Rescued From Forest

Twelve volunteers went above and beyond their normal duties to rescue two starving animals lost in the forest.

On September 5th, concerned dirt bike riders called the Douglas County Sheriff Dispatch because they found two weak and starving dogs on a motorcycle trail, according to deputies.

The dogs were on Skeleton Trail off of Rampart Range Road in the Pike National Forest.

Volunteers with the Douglas County Search and Rescue Team came to the rescue. After a search, the team found the dogs and transported them to Animal Welfare. They were then taken to a veterinarian in Castle Rock.

Douglas County deputies said the animals were given fluids because they were extremely dehydrated, but are expected to make a full recovery.

After being examined, veterinarians found microchips in the animals, and were able to locate the owner.

Douglas County deputies said they interviewed the owner, and found that the animals were taken out to Pike National Forest for recreational purposes on Sept. 1, and then ran off.

The dogs have been reunited with their owner, and authorities said the owner would not be ticketed.
