911 Call, Train Severs Girl’s Legs

The chilling 911 tape that captured the chaos after a train severed a girl’s legs was released on Tuesday.

The incident happened on Monday afternoon in Longmont. Police said Anna Beninati 17, and three friends were trying to hop a freight train when she fell beneath the wheels.

A woman who was driving-by saw what happened and called 911.

“Don’t move her, don’t move her!” said the woman who works as a nurse and emergency medical tech.

“Oh my god, I’m on 3rd Avenue at railroad tracks. Somebody just tried to jump on the train and severed her legs,” she told the dispatcher.

The dispatcher said, ?I got an ambulance on the way for you, OK?

The nurse describes what happened.

“There were four individuals trying to jump the train. One succeeded, the other fell,” she said.

Beninati is from Utah and a freshman at Colorado State University in Fort Collins. The train was hauling 118 empty coal cars and going about 10 miles per hour.

“I really want to get over and try and help her,” the nurse told dispatchers.

She explained that she was in her car because it would be too loud if she stepped outside.

The dispatcher instructs the nurse to provide first aid until help arrives and is very clear on what not to do.

“Do not, do not tourniquet (the wounds),” said the dispatcher.

Another nurse showed up to assist and kept pressure on the wounds to control the bleeding.

“Is she awake?” asked the dispatcher.

“She’s awake. She’s very, very pale,? said the nurse.

Beninati was in shock and didn’t know she had lost her legs, until she heard the nurse tell the dispatcher.

?What part of her leg was amputated? At the ankle? At the knee? He asked.

The nurse responds, ?left side is amputated right below the hip.?

The girl hears this and begins to cry and yell.

?Oh, I am sorry, I am sorry,? the nurse tells the girl. ?I shouldn?t have said that right in her ear. Dammit.?

She tells the dispatcher that the left leg is gone from the mid-thigh and the right leg is gone below the knee.

Beninati was airlifted to a Denver hospital and is in serious condition, said police.

Her family released the following statement on Tuesday:

“We are grateful to the outpouring of support for our daughter following this horrific accident yesterday. From the first responders and transport teams, to the hospitals both in Longmont and Denver, we are thankful to everyone who came to her rescue. We are especially grateful to several bystanders who provided aid for our daughter at the scene. Our family is focused on our daughter and her recovery and we ask that you respect our privacy during this very difficult time.?
