Red Cross Assists People Evacuated From Homes
13 people are being assisted by the Red Cross Sunday morning after an electrical issue causes an evacuation.
Fire crews responded to the Beverly Apartments on Wasatch Avenue at 9 p.m. Saturday. The Red Cross told KRDO NEWSCHANNEL 13 that there was an electrical problem that caused the evacuation.
Firefighters said they are not sure when residents will be allowed to return home.
Catherine Barde, the Director of Development and Communications for the Red Cross, said they opened a shelter for the residents shortly after 1 a.m. Sunday.
Of the almost 30 people evacuated, 13 went to the shelter set up at the First United Methodist Church, said Barde. One of the families at the shelter has four children.
“We will work with the fire department to see if the families can return home,” said Barde. “If it is determined that the families can’t return home, we [Red Cross] will assist the families in finding a hotel until they can return home or find a new place to live.”
