Dogs, Mushrooms: A Deadly Combination

Veterinarians in Southern Colorado have told KRDO Newschannel13 certain mushrooms can make dogs sick or kill them.

After the regular stream of showers, mushrooms are flourishing in yards and even in the Colorado Springs dog park. Chris McReynolds , an area veterinarian and owner of Southern Colorado Veterinary Internal Medicine, said mushrooms can seem like tasty snacks to some dogs, but it?s tough to determine which ones are toxic or even deadly.

?Mostly when they die it’s because of liver failure or kidney failure. It is just so sad because by the time we diagnose it, it is just to late,? said McReynolds.

McReynolds recommends keeping a close eye on your dogs and clearing away all mushrooms on your property. That is just what Kinda Lenberg said she does for her dog, Cooper.

?We try to keep the mushrooms out of the yard. We have a pretty big back yard so we just try to keep them all taken care of,? said Lenberg.

Symptoms include excessive drooling, vomiting, gastrointestinal problems, and if they are just acting strange.

If you think your dogs ate a mushroom, your best bet is to take them to the vet.
