Police Contact Suspected Kidnapper On Facebook

Colorado Springs police issued a warrant for the arrest of Michael Hellems, who is accused of kidnapping his ex-girlfriend at gun point.

Colorado Springs police are taking advantage of social media popularity, using sites like Facebook for reminders as well as posting warrant information.

Police not only posted the warrant information on there own page, they took it a step further.

Sgt. Steve Noblitt with the Colorado Springs police said they were able to find Hellem on Facebook. “The idea is with this particular situation, we not only put it on our Facebook site we were looking for him, we also posted on his Facebook page. There’s a warrant for your arrest, turn yourself in, we know who you are.”

Many Colorado Springs residents think it’s about time.

“I think it’s a great idea…everyone is using Facebook or social media so if you can get the work out and protect the community that’s great,” said Chris Riley.

Police said that the posts are not just about finding suspects, according to Noblitt, “The intent of this is to put as much information out there in the public that we are looking for this guy, he does have a felony warrant for his arrest and he’s dangerous.

Police are asking anyone with information regarding Hellems to call police at 444-7000.
