Fort Carson Soldier Killed In Afghanistan Is Remembered

Friends, family and the military community gathered at the Soldiers? Memorial Chapel at Fort Carson to remember the life of Staff Sgt. Lex Lee Lewis.

Lewis, 40, was serving in Afghanistan when insurgents attacked his unit with small-arms fire on July 15.

Lewis was serving with the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division.

Staff Sgt. Russell Braswell said Lewis was ?somebody that you?d want to meet, a friend that you?d want to have, somebody that you?d want to have have your back.?

Braswell served with Lewis and said that he was one of the best.

?He was an awesome guy. You don?t expect it to happen to anybody,? said Braswell.

Lewis arrived in Afghanistan in June. He had already served two other tours in Iraq.

Lewis is survived by his wife, Molly, stepdaughter, Ariel, and mother, Betty.

Lewis joined the Navy shortly after graduating from high school. Lewis then joined the Army in 1999.

Lewis? was awarded with the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Meritorious Unit Citation, Army Good Conduct Medal, Navy Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, South West Asia Service Medal, Afghanistan Service Medal, Iraqi Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Non-Commissioned Officer Development Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, NATO ISAF Medal, Navy Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Combat Action and the Air Assault Badge.
