Falcon Parents Worried About Dangerous Bus Stop

Parents of Falcon District 49 students told KRDO NEWSCHANNEL 13 that they are worried about a bus stop for elementary school students because it is on a busy road.

The bus stop is for Ridgeview Elementary School students and is located on Poudre Way in front of Skyview Middle School, off of Dublin Boulevard.

Parents said they are concerned because there are no speed bumps or flashing signs warning drivers to slow down in the area. They also pointed out that that the speed limit is 25 miles per hour but drivers tend to speed much faster than that through the school zone.

Samantha Weir has an 8-year-old daughter who waits at the bus stop. Weir said she was waiting for her daughter earlier this week and was concerned for her own safety because of speeding drivers.

She took cellphone video of the drivers. Weir said she hopes more parents stand up for their children who may be in danger.

Weir and another concerned parent said they contacted police and District 49 this week to complain about the bus stop.

District 49 administrators said they have been taking note of concerns and plan to make improvements to bus routes this weekend.

They pointed out that this is the first week of school, so traffic is likely going to more congested in school zones.

Stephanie Meredith, the District 49 spokesperson, also said drivers have a responsibility. She said drivers need to slow down in school zones and yield to bus drivers who are trying to pick up and drop off students.

Meredith also said the district is open to feedback from parents and will take concerns into consideration when making improvements.

If you would like to voice a concern about a bus stop, contact Cindy Hardin, the director of transportation, at 719-495-1120.
