Police ID Man Wanted In Connection To AutoZone Shooting
Police have identified a man wanted in connection with a shooting that left one dead, another hurt at an AutoZone Wednesday night in the Springs.
Police are looking for Ernest Schmidt, 60, of Colorado Springs. He is considered armed and dangerous, according to police. He also goes by the name of Edward Coffey and may be known to be 47-years old as Coffey, police said.
Schmidt is wanted on suspicion of first degree murder, attempted first degree murder, aggravated robbery and second degree kidnapping.
When officers arrived at the AutoZone at 5792 Palmer Park Blvd. Wednesday night, they found one man dead and another inside the store with a gunshot wound. The man inside the store was taken to the hospital where he is recovering, according to police.
Police believe Schmidt also carjacked a car in the AutoZone parking lot and took a man hostage. The man was later released, unhurt, near Palmer Park and Academy boulevards. The car was found a short distance later.
The coroner says the man found dead in the parking lot died from a gunshot wound and ruled his death a homicide.
