$100 Stolen From Dog Park Donation Box
An El Paso County official estimates about $100 was stolen last weekend from a donation box at the popular dog park in Bear Creek Park in Colorado Springs. The metal box was damaged in the process.
“It took someone a lot of time to figure out how to get into this,” said Commissioner Sallie Clark. “And it really wasn’t worth their time, probably.”
The box has been covered with plastic so that it can’t be used, and a sign warns visitors about what happened. Clark said the box collects between $50 and $100 weekly, and from $4,000 to $5,000 annually — mostly in cash. The donations are used to maintain the park.
“The next step is we’ll go back and re-evaluate how the system works, and likely reinstall another box,” said Clark. “A more secure box.” Clark said replacing the box will take about a month. Until then, donations can be made at the county park office at 21st and Creekside.
Clark said she doesn’t think additional measures, such as providing security or reducing park hours, will be necessary. She said she just hopes no one will steal from the box again.
